Specified Skilled Worker Visa - SSW Visa

Specified Skilled Worker Visa - SSW Visa

The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) visa is a work visa category established by the Japanese government in April 2019 to address significant labor shortages in specific industries. This visa is designed for foreign nationals aged 18 and older who possess relevant skills and expertise in designated sectors and are seeking employment opportunities in Japan.

The SSW visa is categorized into two distinct types:

Specified Skilled Worker Type 1: This category caters to individuals entering industries experiencing acute labor shortages, such as nursing care, agriculture, construction, and shipbuilding. Holders of the Type 1 visa can reside in Japan for a maximum of five years but are not permitted to bring their families along during this period.

Specified Skilled Worker Type 2: This category is for individuals working in sectors with moderate labor shortages, including hospitality, food services, and manufacturing. SSW Type 2 visa holders enjoy the advantage of being able to bring their families with them and have the potential for indefinite residency in Japan. Additionally, individuals holding an SSW Type 1 visa can take the necessary tests and apply to transition to the Type 2 category.

To qualify for the SSW visa, applicants must meet specific criteria:

1.Japanese Language Proficiency: You must have a certificate demonstrating your proficiency in Japanese, such as the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N4 level or the JFT Basic (A2) certificate.

2. Skills Examination: You must pass a skills exam relevant to your chosen industry.

These assessments are available to take in Nepal. Upon successfully passing both the language and skills tests, you will enter into a contract with an Accepting Organization (AO) in Japan. Following this, you will undergo a comprehensive six-month orientation program that includes Japanese language training before your departure. After arriving in Japan, an additional six months of language training will further prepare you for your professional role. Once you have completed these training programs successfully, you will be eligible to work in Japan under the SSW framework.
