JLPT – N4/ NAT- TEST 4Q
As you progress in your Japanese language learning journey, the JLPT N4 and NAT-TEST 4Q represent the next level of proficiency, aimed at those who have moved beyond basic communication and wish to deepen their understanding of the language.
JLPT N4 (Japanese Language Proficiency Test - N4 Level)
The JLPT N4 is the second level of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, focusing on slightly more advanced language skills than N5. Passing the JLPT N4 demonstrates that you can:
- Understand and use common expressions and sentences encountered in daily life.
- Read and comprehend passages on familiar topics, written in basic kanji and vocabulary.
- Follow and understand conversations spoken at a slower-than-normal speed, especially those related to everyday situations such as shopping, transportation, and work.
- Participate in simple dialogues and communicate effectively in routine scenarios.
The JLPT N4 is a key milestone for learners who are aiming to live, study, or work in Japan, as it confirms a practical understanding of the language necessary for daily interactions.
NAT-TEST 4Q (Nihongo Achievement Test - Level 4Q)
The NAT-TEST 4Q is equivalent to the JLPT N4 and evaluates a similar level of Japanese proficiency. Like the JLPT, the NAT-TEST 4Q focuses on three main components:
- Grammar and Vocabulary: The test includes more advanced grammar than the 5Q level, as well as a broader range of vocabulary used in daily and routine situations.
- Reading Comprehension: Test-takers must demonstrate the ability to read and understand simple texts written in basic kanji and more complex sentence structures.
- Listening Comprehension: You will need to follow conversations spoken at a normal pace, particularly in everyday scenarios like casual chats, service encounters, and short exchanges.
The NAT-TEST 4Q provides more frequent test dates, allowing for more flexibility in scheduling, and is a useful alternative for those aiming to prove their language proficiency.
Both the JLPT N4 and NAT-TEST 4Q reflect an intermediate level of Japanese that prepares learners to handle common, day-to-day situations in Japan. Passing either of these tests demonstrates a solid grasp of the language and provides a foundation for further language development.
